Stocktaking workshop: Agroecology policy developments in Eastern & Southern Africa

12th March 2025
Online

This online workshop convened government and civil-society actors from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe to exchange on recent developments in National Agroecology Strategies and related policy processes. Building on the peer-to-peer engagement initiated in 2023, the session offered an opportunity to revisit progress, share insights from ongoing national debates, and identify emerging priorities for strengthening agroecology policy frameworks across the region.

About the worksop

The workshop started with country presentations by government and/or civil society representatives working on National Agroecology Strategies or similar policy initiatives. This was then followed by focused discussions in break-out groups, enabling a comparative view of policy trajectories, institutional arrangements and implementation challenges.

The workshop also provided space for collective reflection on political economy factors shaping national processes, including financing constraints, approval pathways and the need for sustained multi-stakeholder coordination.

The event concluded with a forward-looking exchange on potential areas for continued collaboration within the Community of Practice and concrete learning needs for future engagements.

The outcome was the drafting of an update brief on NAS developments in Eastern and Southern Africa as of August 2025.
