Policy brief: Biopesticides beyond the Hype: A checklist to develop a locally–led, agroecologically-rooted biopesticide sector
The growing biopesticide market represents a pivotal opportunity for sustainable agriculture in the Global South. Rising environmental awareness, regulatory pressures on synthetic pesticides, and consumer demand for healthier food systems are driving innovation, investment, and regulatory adaptation in the sector. However, without careful alignment to agroecological principles, the biopesticide industry risks repeating structural and ecological pitfalls seen in the synthetic pesticide sector—such as corporate concentration, input dependency, lack of contextual adaptation and product uniformity. This policy brief provides a checklist to develop a decentralized, nationally driven biopesticides sector that supports crop diversity, empowers farmers, SMEs, and local innovators (especially among youth).
Policy brief: Bringing agroecology to scale in Eastern and Southern Africa: Update on countries’ National Agroecology Strategies
agroecology nationally through National Agroecology Strategies
(NASs). While countries such as Tanzania and Kenya launched theirstrategies in November 2023 and 2024 respectively and have since moved into early stages of implementation, others like Ethiopia, Malawi, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe are currently in the process of finalizing or initiating their own strategies. Policy brief: Agroecology: Connecting People, Land, Climate and Biodiversity – Recommendations on the Road to Belém.
The outcomes of the 2024 Rio Convention COPs underscore the necessity to enhance and utilize synergies among the Conventions. Agroecology is a promising approach that simultaneously contributes to the goals of the UNFCCC, CBD, and UNCCD. By adopting a systemic approach to food system transformation based on agroecological principles, countries can achieve multiple socio-ecological and economic benefits while fulfilling their commitments to the Rio Conventions.
This policy brief by the Agroecology Coalition, GIZ, Biovision, Cari and WWF presents six concrete recommendations to leverage partnerships and collaborative efforts to anchor agroecology within the Conventions.

Outcome brief: National Agroecology Strategies in Eastern and Southern Africa: Lighthouses for food system transformation
National strategies for an agroecological transformation or National Agroecology Strategies (NASs) are currently in development in Eastern and Southern Africa. These strategies have the potential to harness opportunities of a sustainable development of agri-food systems, by upscaling agroecological production practices, developing markets, value chains and consumer demand that can accelerate transition.

Policy briefs: Agroecology Dialogue Series
The Agroecology Dialogue Series, an initiative of FAO and Biovision Foundation, organized in fall 2022 consisted of three thematic dialogues that aimed to identify entry points, opportunities, building blocks, innovative approaches and institutional frameworks with potential to support the upscale of agroecology.
As a result three policy briefs where published:
- Policy brief #1: The interface between agroecological and territorial approaches for food systems transformations
- Policy brief #2: Beyond the farm: Exploring the synergies between agroecology and conservation communities
- Policy brief #3: Agroecology as a response to agri-input scarcity
