Report: Market demand and business environment for agroecological enterprises in Kenya

The growth of agroecological enterprises (AEEs) presents an opportunity for stimulating agroecological farming. This study provides evidence to back advocacy for increased financial and policy support for Kenyan AEEs. It examines consumer demand and provides a market systems analysis of the business operating environment for AEEs and demand from farmers for agroecological inputs.

For all donors and investors with questions around why and how to invest in agroecological enterprises, we and our partners have developed a comprehensive guide that compiles the latest evidence and information on the topic. The guide outlines the ways in which agroecological enterprises generate positive social, environmental impacts that contribute to food system transformation. It also explains why investing in agroecological enterprises makes good business sense. The guide also contains inspiring showcases of agroecological enterprises as well as examples of innovative financing mechanisms.

Policy brief: Agroecology: Connecting People, Land, Climate and Biodiversity – Recommendations on the Road to Belém.

The outcomes of the 2024 Rio Convention COPs underscore the necessity to enhance and utilize synergies among the Conventions. Agroecology is a promising approach that simultaneously contributes to the goals of the UNFCCC, CBD, and UNCCD. By adopting a systemic approach to food system transformation based on agroecological principles, countries can achieve multiple socio-ecological and economic benefits while fulfilling their commitments to the Rio Conventions.

This policy brief by the Agroecology Coalition, GIZ, Biovision, Cari and WWF presents six concrete recommendations to leverage partnerships and collaborative efforts to anchor agroecology within the Conventions.

Outcome brief: National Agroecology Strategies in Eastern and Southern Africa: Lighthouses for food system transformation

 

National strategies for an agroecological transformation or National Agroecology Strategies (NASs) are currently in development in Eastern and Southern Africa. These strategies have the potential to harness opportunities of a sustainable development of agri-food systems, by upscaling agroecological production practices, developing markets, value chains and consumer demand that can accelerate transition.

Infosheet: Engaging Policymakers and Making the Case for Agroecology

At Biovision Foundation’s quinquennial Partner Meeting held in Arusha in September 2023, Biovision’s partners from civil society, research, academia and the private sector participated in two thematic sessions on policy advocacy that shed light on known best practices and effective strategies for engaging with policymakers and making the case for agroecology as a holistic solution to food systems issues. This summary highlights the main messages and learnings of the participant groups.

Policy brief: Agroecology: A transformative opportunity for biodiversity and the Rio Conventions

Agroecology represents an unparalleled opportunity to address biodiversity loss while providing simultaneous, multiple
co-benefits to climate adaptation, food security, water conservation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable livelihoods and human rights. This brief explains how.
It originated in the lead-up to COP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in December 2022, with a focus on agroecology and agricultural biodiversity as central to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). While it retains this biodiversity focus, it has been expanded to include climate and land considerations.

Policy briefs: Agroecology Dialogue Series

The Agroecology Dialogue Series, an initiative of FAO and Biovision Foundation, organized in fall 2022 consisted of three thematic dialogues that aimed to identify entry points, opportunities, building blocks, innovative approaches and institutional frameworks with potential to support the upscale of agroecology.

This report, co-developed by Biovision, IPES-Food and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), zooms in on the all-important financial flows in food system research to sub-Saharan Africa, with a view to understanding more about how the industrial model is perpetuated and where the opportunities lie for sparking agroecological transition.

Study: The Impact of Agroecology on the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): An Integrated Scenario Analysis

This iSDG modelling analysis presents and compares the results for the 17 SDGs under two different scenarios: the Business As Usual (BAU) and the Agroecology (AE) scenario for a typical semiarid African country.
 
The iSDG simulation analysis led to 8 key findings regarding the assessment of the impact of a set of agroecological interventions for a typical semi-arid African country on the achievement of all SDGs.
