Enabling policy frameworks for agroecology

The objective of the programme is to increase the sustainability of food systems in Sub-Saharan African and beyond by creating coherent and equitable policy frameworks that enable an agroecological transformation of food systems.

Global crises highlight the need for action

Climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic and the current food crisis clearly show that for a successful transformation towards sustainable food systems, we need to align the way we produce and consume food with agroecological principles. However, the formulation and implementation of supportive policies for this transformation remain a major challenge within the agroecological agenda.

Reasons for this include a lack of knowledge and awareness as well as low levels of acceptance of agroecological approaches and their contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals among political decision makers. In addition, an unequal distribution of power and insufficient interdisciplinary collaboration hinder the adoption of agroecology as a pathway for sustainable food systems. Consequently, the interests of structurally underrepresented groups are often neglected in policy formulation and societal issues are not considered holistically.

Advocacy work to show the way forward

To address these challenges, the programme develops an advocacy framework to sensitize and engage new actors in the potential of agroecology, while supporting existing champions that already implement agroecological approaches. At the national level, policy makers receive tailored guidance to develop strategies for an agroecological transformation in their country. At the international level, it promotes a peer-to-peer exchange through policy forums and engages in global networks to showcase good practice examples as well as disseminate scientific and practical knowledge.

Additionally, the programme supports multi-stakeholder platforms at the national and sub-national level in Kenya and Uganda to enhance the inclusion and participation of diverse actors in food systems related policy processes. A particular focus lies on empowering smallholder farmers, women and youth groups and on cross-sectoral coordination and information.

Making agroecology visible: A Biovision approach

Biovision is committed to improving the political framework conditions for agroecology. A key lever: the visibility of enterprises that successfully implement agroecology. These enterprises demonstrate that economic success and social commitment can go hand in hand, providing compelling evidence in favour of sustainable agricultural policies. In the video, we use the example of an award ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda, to demonstrate exactly how we shine the spotlight on these enterprises.

“Agroecology is key to restoring fertile soils”

Globally, soil quality is deteriorating at an alarming rate—millions of people are affected, and vast areas of agricultural land are being lost.
