Strong Communities and Organic Farming in Malawi

This project supports a training and research centre for agroecological agriculture in Malawi. Farmers involved in the project test different cultivation methods to find ways to increase their food security and reduce dependence on artificial fertilizers. An important aspect of the project is the cooperation between men and women to raise everyone’s awareness of the work and share in its success.

Farmers will be trained in agroecological agriculture techniques in a research and training centre. By diversifying their cultivation practices, they can increase crop yields and reduce their dependence on synthetic fertilisers. The centre provides a permaculture and demonstration garden for agroecology and encourages farmers to experiment with different farming methods. A man and a woman each form a so-called “Farmer Research Team” in order to try out new cultivation methods or combinations of seeds together with other farmers and sharing their findings in farmer groups. The centre also offers cooking classes to inspire participants to cultivate and eat a greater variety of foods. Gender roles are a major focus: women are empowered through agriculture and experimentation, and men are involved in the cooking classes.

Owner Johannes Küng tells us in an interview what makes the tea so valuable.

“The agroecological approach is essential”

Alexander Wostry and his wife Janet Maro run Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT). Since its foundation 10 years ago, SAT has been able to enthuse thousands of farmers about the benefits of agroecological agriculture. In September 2020, the ancillary social enterprise SAT Holistic Group created a market for women agroecological producers. In an interview, Wostry revealed the recipe behind SAT’s success.
