Long-term System Comparison

This research project examines how organic farming can be profitable in tropical climates and thus ensure greater food security. The focus is on the involvement of the farmers during the research process to ensure practicable solutions.

This long-term project compares conventional with organic agriculture and provides robust, scientific evidence of the contribution that organic farming can make to improving food security and reducing poverty. It is part of a global study coordinated by FiBL, the Swiss Research Institute of Organic Agriculture.

SysCom investigates how organic agriculture can be profitable in tropical regions and what contribution it can make to sustainable development. For this purpose, SysCom analyses various aspects of the food system with its local partner organisations. A central aspect of the project is that it involves local farmers with their knowledge and experience in the research.

2021 the FIBL researchers were awarded the “SHIFT Prize” for the Syscom project. The prize honors agroecological projects that promote sustainable development and contribute to a transformation of food systems. The FiBL project prevailed against 27 competitors.

Agricultural and food systems worldwide are under pressure as never before due to climate change, water scarcity, biodiversity loss and soil fertility decline. Agroecology is an alternative, that has the potentiel to improve the resilience of food systems and produce enough healthy food for all in a healthy environment.

Thriller in the cornfield

Within arable fields and soils rages a battle to the death. At least in the push-pull fields of East Africa, beneficial insects are gaining the upper hand over pests. Decisive is communication among plants and between plants and insects.
