For an Agroecological Swiss Food Policy

The Swiss food system from 2030 onwards should take on an agroecological character: environment and animal friendly with fair social conditions for all involved. The programme will contribute to the necessary political changes required.

To realise our vision of a sustainable Swiss food future, the programme «Agroecological Transformation of the Swiss Food System» builds on our successful earlier projects («Food Future Switzerland», «Transformation of the Swiss Food System» and «Successful Practical Examples» (in German)). Our goal is to anchor agroecology in Swiss agriculture and food policy. We take a holistic approach and use three interlinked levers:

1. Mainstreaming Agroecology in Swiss Agricultural and Food policy

  • We strive for political strategies and measures, such as the new Agricultural Policy 2030, recognising agroecology as a key approach to sustainable food systems and defining corresponding goals and measures.
  • Political decision-makers and alliances should understand the importance of agroecology and recognise it as a crucial element in food system transformation.
  • Our activities include collaboration with federal offices, active participation in alliances and scientific research of challenges and levers in agricultural policy.

2. Strengthening and Disseminating Regional Agroecological Food Systems

  • We are committed to the strengthening and spreading of regional agroecological food systems in Switzerland.
  • In selected regions, we promote participatory processes with all actors along the value chain and political decision-makers to jointly develop solutions for this.
  • As a result, practical solution strategies can be presented that can be directly implemented for each region.

3. Mainstreaming Agroecology in Public Awareness

  • Through our initiatives and by building and collaborating in networks (e.g. Agroecology Works!), we promote awareness and support for agroecology in Switzerland.
  • Targeted public advocacy is intended to establish agroecology as a relevant concept for decision-makers in politics and food systems.
  • We use convincing messages and positive examples to communicate what characterises an agroecological food system from cultivation to consumption, from field to plate.

Beacons of Agroecology

We showcase examples that prove a sustainable food system in Switzerland is possible. From organic farms to cooperation between farmers and consumers, «beacons of agroecology» (in German) highlights Swiss initiatives that set an example for a better food future. To select the beacons, we use the B-ACT Tool which shows how much agroecology is enmeshed in a business and its contribution to a sustainable food system.

By strengthening agroecological area-based food systems, we are venturing into a promising new field of activity. The overall programme is based on Biovision’s proven areas of expertise and makes a significant contribution to achieving the global sustainable development goals of the UN Agenda 2030.
