Beekeeping and Mangrove Protection in Zanzibar

The project combines beekeeping with sustainable forest use. Through the use of bees, the people promote the pollination of surrounding plants and have an additional source of income through the honey. They can use the wood they receive from the reforestation measures without destroying the sensitive mangrove forests.

The project aims to link beekeeping to multifunctional trees that are used as an alternative to endangered mangroves. These trees provide a source of food for the bees as well as cattle, supply firewood, and improve soil quality. By linking beekeeping with sustainable forest use, we can create awareness of the important functions of mangrove forests in coastal areas, thus contributing to reducing their overexploitation and the deforestation of these critical ecosystems in Zanzibar.

A plus in biodiversity and income thanks to bees

Bees pollinate up to 80% of all plants and so are amongst the most important working animals in agriculture. In addition, bees produce honey, a healthy food that improves the diet of smallholders and their families in sub-Saharan Africa and increases incomes.
