Forest School Mpigi, Uganda

Traditional healers play an important role in health care in rural Uganda. Training in organic farming methods increases their understanding of sustainable medicinal plant use and therefore conserves forest resources.

In order to increase the production of organic vegetables by local farmers, improve the inadequate medical services in rural areas and at the same time protect the environment, natural healers are being trained in traditional medicine and organic farming methods. As a way of generating enthusiasm for organic methods amongst the younger generation, the Forest School is supporting the development of smallscale businesses. Medicinal plants are highly valued locally and so the project is making natural healers aware of the importance of the forests so that they can act as ambassadors for the responsible use of natural resources.
