Food Future Switzerland

“Food Future Switzerland” makes a substantial contribution to the current discussion on future holistic policies for a healthy and sustainable food system in Switzerland. For the first time in Switzerland, a national citizens’ council will gather and develop recommendations for concrete measures on food policy, and a scientific expert panel will develop and present current proposals.

This project has been completed. The information on this page shows the path Biovision took in collaboration with local partners – and the approaches that were central to it.

Citizens get a voice

What do people in Switzerland envision as the way forward for the sustainable, fair production of enough food in the future? What are the latest solutions informed by the scientific community? The joint project “Food Future Switzerland” by Landwirtschaft mit Zukunft, Sustainable Development Solutions Network Switzerland and Biovision will answer these questions and provide answers. It will contribute substantially to the ongoing opinions being formed in the debate on sustainable design of Swiss food policy. It will also lead to better public understanding of a food systems approach. The main work is done by the following bodies.a citizens’ council and scientific panel.

Citizens’ Council for Food Policy

Viable solutions for a new Swiss food policy need broad support. They should therefore be developed in direct consultation with the public. This is why a Citizens’ Council for Food Policy is being created. It is composed of 85 Swiss residents who are as representative as possible of the population. The members of the Citizens’ Council will participate in 11 events between June and November and discuss a holistic food policy for Switzerland. They will be accompanied by a scientific board* to ensure that the different perspectives and interests of various sectors and stakeholders in the food system are considered in the process of forming viewpoints. The work of the Citizens’ Council will be public and can be followed online. In a democratic decision-making process, the proposed solutions will ultimately adopted and passed on to politicians, administrators and other stakeholders.

Scientific Expert Panel

The Food Future Switzerland Expert Panel includes of over 30 leading scientists and has been active since autumn 2021. It compiles an overview of current scientific findings about food systems and develops concrete solutions for transforming our food system. The panel’s inputs are shared with the Citizens’ Council for Food Policy and made available for scientific queries and fact checks. The results of the panel’s work will be made publicly available in a white paper for broad discussion and as a basis for decision-making for Swiss policymakers.
