Peer-to-Peer Online Dialogue — Integrating Agroecology into NBSAPs

Online

The event explored strategic pathways related to integrating food systems and agroecology into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), which guide national contributions to the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Over 50 participants from 18 countries—including national NBSAP focal points, food-system and agroecology policy actors, and civil society representatives—joined the session with the shared objective of reflecting on how agroecological and food-system principles can be incorporated into revised or upcoming NBSAPs. The event fostered the exchange of best practices, highlighted key challenges, and laid the groundwork for future country-level action.

In the context of the initiative “Boosting NBSAPs through Agroecology”, the Biovision Foundation — together with the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, WWF International, and supported by the Agroecology Coalition — convened this online dialogue.

Programme and outcome

Short peer inputs showcased how different countries approach food-systems transformation within NBSAP revisions.

Facilitated discussions further examined concrete policy entry points, governance structures, financing needs and implementation pathways, and contributed to identifying key challenges such as coordination gaps, financing constraints and data limitations, along with potential ways to address them. The organisers also presented upcoming support tools and opportunities for continued collaboration, setting the stage for next steps, including an in-person peer exchange and a forthcoming guidance tool for agroecology-informed NBSAP development. The event highlighted the value of a holistic food-systems perspective for biodiversity and strengthened relationships between government actors, experts and civil-society partners across regions. The outcome was a summary brief with key messages and advocacy tips for the integration of agroecology into NBSAPs.
