Mainstreaming Food Systems in Biodiversity and Climate Agendas: Aligning National Commitments with Powerful Tools

10.10.2025 - 16:30-18:30 (UTC+4)
IUCN World Conservation Congress - Toolbox event

As countries develop, update, and implement their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to meet global and national biodiversity targets, integrating food systems presents a critical opportunity for transformative change that simultaneously advances biodiversity conservation and climate action.

About

This session introduces interactive, web-based tools that help integrate food systems into NBSAPs and other biodiversity policies. We will present the Food Forward NDCs & NBSAPs tool which provides accessible, science-based policy guidance on concrete pathways for nature-positive agriculture,
sustainable consumption, food loss and waste reduction, and practices for climate mitigation and adaptation. The “Boosting Biodiversity Action Through Agroecology Guidance” (NBSAP-Agroecology Handbook) offers a structured approach to embedding agroecology into biodiversity and climate planning. The Agriculture Sectoral Interpretation provides guidance to apply the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions in an agricultural context.Through hands-on interactions, participants will explore how to apply these tools to align food systems, biodiversity, and climate policies, while accelerating progress toward the GBF, climate targets under the Paris Agreement, and a nature-positive future by 2050 and get information about funding opportunities to support implementation
