Peer-to-peer exchange: Boosting NBSAPs through Agroecology

9-10 May 2024
Nairobi and Kiambu County (Kenya)

In the context of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), revising their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to meet the ambitions of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Biovision and partners organised a Peer-to-Peer activity in Kenya entitled “Boosting NBSAPs through Agroecology”. During this 3-day activity, government officials working on NBSAPs, food systems and agroecological policies as well as selected non-state actors from Cambodia, Colombia, Kenya, Mexico, Switzerland, Tanzania and Uganda met in Nairobi (Kenya) to discuss the integration of agroecology and agroecosystems approaches in the development of their respective NBSAPs. A field visit was also conducted in Kiambu County to experience the potential of agroecology on-site.

This peer-to-peer activity was part of the initiative “Boosting NBSAPs through Agroecology”. It offered countries a platform to discuss how agroecology can strengthen ongoing NBSAP revisions and better connect biodiversity goals with sustainable and resilient food systems. Led by Biovision and partners, the session highlighted opportunities to integrate agroecology across key KMGBF targets and underscored the importance of clear framing and strong coordination between environment, agriculture and planning institutions.

Participants shared practical policy entry points, including aligning biodiversity and food-systems strategies, improving cross-sectoral collaboration and enhancing monitoring frameworks. They also pointed to common challenges such as limited financing, technical capacity and the difficulty of translating agroecological principles into actionable measures.

The exchange concluded with a call for continued collaboration, improved evidence for decision-making and support for countries working to operationalize agroecology in their revised NBSAPs. A guidance tool to support this work is available here: https://nbsap.futureoffood.org/.
