Policy and Advocacy

If we are going to achieve sustainable global food security, we need changes to be made in the  political arena, because that is where the direction of events is decided. This is therefore where the “Policy and Advocacy” (P&A) team is applying the pressure. This team squarely confronts decision-makers on the national and international stage with the topics of sustainable agriculture and food system transformation.


The knowledge of food system transformation that we have built up over many years is increasingly in demand. Governments and international organisations are helping each other to set out programmes and measures to achieve the UN’s Agenda 2030 and combat the climate crisis. This can also be seen in Biovision’s countless successful partnerships – with the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Swiss Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) and the Global Alliance for the Future of Food (GA) – an alliance between leading foundations seeking a transformation of the food system in order to achieve greater sustainability.

More Research for Agroecology

The focus is on developing systemic research (in the area of agroecology) through an increase in investment in projects and institutes, as well as on forming and networking multidisciplinary research teams from distinguished research institutions. The objective is to increase the level of awareness, promotion and dissemination of the major untapped potential in systemic, agroecological farming and food systems on the basis of the scientific evidence. In a study published in 2020, Biovision examined how research funds are currently distributed between industrial and sustainable agriculture, and formulated recommendations for ways out of the dead end of industrial agriculture.

Using Agroecology to Combat Climate Change

Creating comprehensible communication about scientific and other relevant findings plus the technical and political potential of agroecology as a holistic solution for current climate-related environmental problems. The long-term goal is to create the necessary political conditions to produce enough healthy food using an ecological approach and to enable small farmers to adapt better to external changes such as climate change. Peer-to-peer exchanges among policy makers

Policy makers are most likely to learn and get inspired by peers they appreciate. This initiative supports an interactive network, primarily driven by state and regional policy makers to exchange on successful policies, innovative approach and evidence to sustainably transform food and agricultural systems. It relies on peer-to-peer exchanges events, which offer opportunities for policy makers to learn from each other’s experience. A few selected governments also receive in-depth guidance from champions and experts. The objective is to foster coherent policies that will drive the transformation of Food Systems based on agroecological principles, aligned with the SDGs.
