Les atteintes aux fonctions naturelles des sols qui en ont r\u00e9sult\u00e9 ont engendr\u00e9 \u00e0 leur tour une perte de biodiversit\u00e9, une \u00e9rosion des sols et, par cons\u00e9quent, une diminution des r\u00e9coltes. Il est temps d\u2019agir, et vite.<\/p><p>Depuis de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, SysCom compare les eff ets \u00e0 long terme de l\u2019agriculture bio avec ceux de l\u2019agriculture conventionnelle dans les r\u00e9gions tropicales (voir p. 2\u20133). En la mati\u00e8re, les scientifi ques ont une bonne nouvelle\u2009: l\u2019agriculture biologique off re des solutions concr\u00e8tes\u2009! Et ces derni\u00e8res germent sous nos pieds.<\/p><p>Voici un des constats principaux\u2009: la qualit\u00e9 et la sant\u00e9 des sols sont essentielles pour garantir la productivit\u00e9 et la sant\u00e9 des syst\u00e8mes agricoles. L\u2019agriculture conventionnelle con\u00e7oit globalement le sol comme un milieu de transport qui am\u00e8ne aux plantes des nutriments et de l\u2019eau apport\u00e9s de fa\u00e7on artifi &#8211; cielle. L\u2019agriculture bio consid\u00e8re quant \u00e0 elle que le sol fait partie int\u00e9grante du syst\u00e8me de production et qu\u2019il s\u2019acquitte de fonctions tr\u00e8s diverses\u2009: une fonction d\u2019habitat pour une multitude de micro-organismes, mais aussi des fonctions de r\u00e9servoir, de fi ltre, de tampon, de transport ainsi que de transformation des nutriments et de l\u2019eau. Mais pour qu\u2019il puisse assurer toutes ces fonctions, le sol doit \u00eatre d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 et Car un sol en bonne sant\u00e9 est \u00e0 m\u00eame de nourrir durablement les plantes qui y poussent. \u00c9l\u00e9ment fondamental commun \u00e0 tous les \u00eatres vivants, connu \u00e9galement sous la forme de dioxyde de carbone (CO2) et tristement c\u00e9l\u00e8bre en tant que gaz \u00e0 eff et de serre, le carbone joue un r\u00f4le essentiel dans ce processus. Il est stock\u00e9 dans les sols sous forme d\u2019humus et peut \u00eatre lib\u00e9r\u00e9 dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re si les sols sont malmen\u00e9s.<\/p><p>L\u2019humus est une forme complexe de carbone qui se d\u00e9veloppe \u00e0 travers un long processus de transformation de mati\u00e8re organique morte (r\u00e9sidus v\u00e9g\u00e9taux). Diff \u00e9rents organismes du sol tels que vers de terre, collemboles, bact\u00e9ries et champignons se chargent de d\u00e9composer la mati\u00e8re. Ils produisent d\u2019une part l\u2019humus jeune, disponible \u00e0 court terme, et d\u2019autre part l\u2019humus stable, qui peut subsister sur plusieurs d\u00e9cennies.<\/p><p>L\u2019humus remplit des fonctions tr\u00e8s vari\u00e9es\u2009:<\/p><ul><li>Il accumule des \u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs importants pour les plantes et stocke l\u2019eau telle une \u00e9ponge.<\/li><li>Il est capable de fi xer des substances nocives comme les m\u00e9taux lourds et donc de les neutraliser.<\/li><li>Il contribue \u00e0 perm\u00e9abiliser et \u00e0 stabiliser le sol, pr\u00e9venant ainsi son \u00e9rosion.<\/li><li>Il joue le r\u00f4le d\u2019habitat pour des organismes du sol et des v\u00e9g\u00e9taux.<\/li><li>Il peut stocker du carbone dans le sol, contribuant ainsi \u00e0 la protection du climat.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Dans un climat tropical, il est plus diffi cile de constituer de l\u2019humus et de le pr\u00e9server. L\u2019activit\u00e9 des organismes du sol y est en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral plus importante en raison des temp\u00e9ratures \u00e9lev\u00e9es et de l\u2019humidit\u00e9 qui r\u00e8gnent toute l\u2019ann\u00e9e. D\u00e8s que le sol est labour\u00e9, il est a\u00e9r\u00e9, ce qui accro\u00eet encore cette activit\u00e9. Nous avons pu en r\u00e9unir des quantit\u00e9s suffi santes en utilisant du compost qui contenait de la paille de ma\u00efs, du fumier de bovins, des cendres ainsi que diff \u00e9rents v\u00e9g\u00e9taux riches en nutriments (Tithonia). Une fois les couches dispos\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re optimale, le compost a \u00e9t\u00e9 retourn\u00e9 r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement puis stock\u00e9 plusieurs semaines, afi n de permettre aux parts de carbone de se fi xer ad\u00e9quatement. L\u2019apport direct de mati\u00e8res v\u00e9g\u00e9tales sur les surfaces cultiv\u00e9es contribue lui aussi \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer la qualit\u00e9 du sol. Couvrir le sol avec un paillis ou incorporer du compost ne prot\u00e8ge pas seulement le sol du lessivage et de la dessication.
