Funders argue that an important condition for supporting a project is that it\u00a0delivers results and turns profit quickly\u00a0\u2013 both insufficient criteria that favor conventional agriculture. Social, societal, political and economic aspects, such as those addressed by circular or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biovision.ch\/en\/news\/idealists-out-in-the-field\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solidarity-based farming<\/a>\u00a0or questions of who owns the land on which crops are grown, do not receive sufficient attention, even though these would be crucial in designing a sustainable food system.<\/li><li><strong>Most of the funds earmarked for the development on the African continent do not flow to Africa\u00a0<\/strong>but instead support projects led by research institutes in the global North. What you save in inputs for cultivation, for example by not having to purchase fertilizer or seeds, is needed elsewhere in the form of knowledge.\u00a0Sharpening farmers\u2019 and entrepreneurs\u2019 understanding of agroecology therefore requires investment.\u00a0If young entrepreneurs can prove that they work profitably, this also attracts investors.\u00a0This is how\u00a0we will ultimately free agroecology from being confined to a niche field\u201d, says Stefanie Pondini, Programme Manager Policy Dialogue and Advocacy at Biovision.<\/p><p class=\"bodytext\">There are only a few showcase projects, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itswild.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COMACO<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashoka.org\/fr\/histoire\/sylvia-banda-growing-local-food-systems-training-female-farmers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sylvas Food Solution<\/a>\u00a0from Zambia, that have been able to go beyond smallholder structures and convince investors of the economic viability of agroecology.\u00a0But the first agroecologically structured enterprises are emerging.\u00a0The Biovision partner organization Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT) has already taken a big step in this direction by founding SAT Holistic Group Limited.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section class=\"bodytext\">To ensure that more is invested in such agroecological projects and enterprises in the long term, it is not only necessary to have informed and convinced donors but also\u00a0more agroecological and entrepreneurial knowledge among farmers.<\/p><p class=\"bodytext\">Initial clarifications by Biovision with experts from Uganda and Kenya have revealed that it would be worthwhile to create a knowledge and networking hub for sharing background information on business processes, where entrepreneurs could be trained to develop agroecological business models.
