Trees for Animal Welfare

Agroforestry, the integration of trees into agriculture, is a promising agricultural method for facing the challenges of climate change. Trees and shrubs hold enormous potential for improving livestock management by providing diverse fodder, protection from wind and heat, more resilient grazing land and thus better animal health. The project is examining in more detail the benefits of keeping livestock in forested areas in Ethiopia to show how it affects animal health, the economic situation of livestock farmers and the environment. The applied research will provide knowledge necessary for expanding agroforestry and species-appropriate animal husbandry.
