Trees for Animal Welfare

This project investigates how using trees in livestock farming contributes to better livestock health and to the conservation and improvement of pasture land. Agroforestry is a promising concept that also has the potential to improve local people’s economic situation.

In view of climate change, the integration of trees into agriculture (agroforestry) is a promising method. Additionally, trees and shrubs have a huge potential to improve livestock production by providing varied fodder, protecting from wind and heat, and making pastures more resilient. The project is examining the benefits of this “livestock in forest” approach in Ethiopia in more detail to show how it affects the health of the animals, the economic situation of the livestock farmers and the environment.
