Sustainable Grazeland Management

Livestock farming forms the basis livelihoods of the populations in northern Kenya, but grazing land is degraded by overuse and deforestation. The project strengthens sustainable use of grazing land through a two-pronged approach.

First, traditional grazing land committees are strengthened so that degraded grazing land can be rehabilitated, for example by planting drought-tolerant trees and bushes for animal feed. Second, invasive plants are combated by processing them into fuel and animal feed. Women and young people thus receive an additional source of income.

Major steps to improve animal health

If goats, sheep, cattle or camels fall sick, their owners suffer too. When faced with this situation, livestock farmers in rural Africa usually have to cope entirely on their own. The project “Camels for drought areas” in Kenya is seeking to improve this.
