Information System for Diseases and Droughts

This project supports the development of a disease outbreak information and early warning system to better protect humans and animals from epidemics or harmful environmental occurrences. Its aim is to better protect the health and livelihoods of livestock farmers.

Cattle herders are exposed to many dangers: drought, malnutrition and diseases that affect both people and livestock. In this project, Jigjiga University, in collaboration with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, is developing a communication system that collects information from remote areas by mobile phone and warns of disease outbreaks. In this way, dangerous epidemics and impending droughts can be detected early. The project additionally focuses on linking traditional knowledge with modern technologies. In order to obtain better information about water and pasture land, the nomads’ traditional methods of surveying such resources are enriched with satellite data and the information is passed on to the herders.
