Organic farming has become much more important in East Africa in recent years. Environmentally friendly agricultural methods are a prerequisite for sustainable rural development. In order that organic farming represents a viable option for small farmers, it must also be economical for them. During the conversion from conventional to organic agriculture they are thus dependent on instructions and guidance by a professional team of experts. But a lack of training opportunities at the education centres of African universities leads to a dearth of skilled personnel in the area of sustainable agriculture. This will be approached by means of a yearly training course.
The agricultural courses, which have been running every year since 2005, are a complete success. Biovision co-supported the course in 2009, enabling, among others, 30 African students (10 each from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania) to take part in this successful international training in organic agriculture.
