Sebeta Biofarm

Income security for small farmers and support for the visually impaired

In Sebeta, about 30 km south-west of Addis Abeba, an agricultural training centre (Biofarm) has been developed in the grounds of a School for the Blind. Developed in cooperation with DOPD, an Ethiopian development organisation for persons with a disability, it provides pupils from the School for the Blind and local farmers with instruction on organic farming methods. In addition to practical training, they are provided with the tools that enable them to apply this new knowledge on their own farms and to pass it on to their neighbours. The food produced during the training is used in the school kitchen and the surplus is sold at the local market. The project is nearing completion and the aim now is to strengthen the training centre in Sebeta and hand it over to the local community in order to secure teaching in the future.
