Habitat Restoration

Biofarm II, Periurban Habitat Restoration, Initiative for soil improvement and organic farming in Ethiopia

To turn desert and wastelands into fertile lands is one of man's oldest dreams. In the slums of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian BioEconomy Association (BEA) with support from Biovision, realised the BioFarm-Project: 5 hectares of land made infertile through erosion was turned into a productive agro-forestry venture with vegetable production and animal husbandry by working together with groups of beneficiaries.

It took around 5 years to restore the habitat. The project is a success and should be emulated as a model for further initiatives. In order to provide inexpensive means for improvement the training methods have a scientific accompaniment and are further developed. Experiences are appraised and should serve further habitat restoration initiatives.
